This morning, we previewed the initial study work for the Downtown Open Space Network (OSN) initiative with a group of design professionals and civic-minded individuals at the Louisville Downtown Partnership’s Placemaking Roundtable.
The purpose of the OSN initiative is to develop a framework that helps identify strategic opportunities and sites in the most walkable areas of downtown to improve the pedestrian experience and infuse nature into our built environment to create a greener, healthier and more vibrant urban core. This process began with identifying the most walkable corridors that could connect destinations with the existing parks, plazas and open spaces downtown, building on Louisville Downtown Partnership's 2024 strategic plan, A New Paradigm for Downtown Louisville.
The initial study, intended to be a starting point for collaboration and discussion around creating a more vibrant downtown, examines various aspects that contribute to a walkable environment, explores the current conditions of the identified OSN, and provides some ideas and recommendations for potential improvements.
This effort is just the start. There is more information here on our website as well as a link to the latest version of the initial study. We look forward to working with people interested in finding solutions to revitalize downtown, engaging discussions around issues and opportunities, but most of all, helping to move ideas into action and connecting people, places and projects for both short-term interventions and activations as well as long-term, systemic improvements to our urban core.
