This summer, the Urban Design Studio (UDS) and the Greenprint Initiative welcomed two interns through the Jean Frazier Leadership Institute at Sacred Heart Schools. Two rising juniors, Vivian Cox and Sara Cunningham, had the unique opportunity to work on multiple projects related to the Greenprint initiative while gaining exposure to a variety of work taking place at the Urban Design Studio, the Envirome Institute, and beyond. The interns directly contributed to the Greenprint initiative, assisting with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analysis, assessing the health of the Trager MicroForest, and creating GIS web applications. While UDS typically works with college interns, our Urban Futures program has allowed us to deepen our experience working with younger folks across the county. So far, Urban Futures has primarily focused on creating collaborative units/lessons on urban design and history with local teachers. This Greenprint internship is the first foray into more directly working with high school students outside of the classroom.
