During the Spring of 2023, the UofL Masters of Urban Planning Capstone focused on a variety of projects related to downtown revitalization and urban greening. The final project examined efforts around the concept of a Health Corridor along Muhammad Ali Blvd from Preston to 7th Street.
The main goal of their work was to explore how to connect the UofL Envirome Institute's New Vision of Health campus with their existing research facilities in the Medical District, creating a vibrant pedestrian friendly corridor that will be green and healthy by design.
The students surveyed the current conditions of the corridor, researched the rich history of Walnut Street (now Muhammad Ali Blvd), reviewed best practices from other cities as well as past and current planning initiatives related to the corridor, and potential activation opportunities as can be found in their Capstone Presentation (PDF).
The Health Corridor project will continue to build on their work as we look to create a more walkable, healthy and enjoyable experience for people who work, live or visit the heart of Louisville.
