Disclaimer
This web tool is designed to provide users with estimated exposure levels to air toxics based on data from EPA’s AirToxScreen at the census tract level. The information is for educational and informational purposes only and is not intended to diagnose, treat, or predict health outcomes. While the data used in this tool are derived from reputable sources, including EPA, users should understand that these estimates are modeled values and not direct measurements of air quality at specific locations. Always consult environmental health experts or government agencies for detailed analysis or action related to air pollution exposure.
Limitations
-
Modeled Data
The exposure values displayed in this tool are derived from AirToxScreen, which uses complex models based on emissions inventories, meteorological data, and chemical transport simulations. These values are estimates and may not reflect real-time air quality or localized variations.
-
Census Tract Scale
Exposure estimates are averaged at the census tract level and may not capture fine-scale differences within smaller areas, such as neighborhoods or individual properties.
-
Health Risk Interpretation
Comparisons to Reference Concentrations (RfCs) and other benchmarks are provided for context but do not directly predict health outcomes. Exceeding an RfC or benchmark does not necessarily mean adverse health effects will occur but may indicate a need for further investigation.
-
Sensitive Populations
The tool does not account for individual susceptibility or pre-existing health conditions, which may influence the potential impact of air toxics.
-
Data Lag
AirToxScreen data are updated periodically and may not reflect the most recent emissions or changes in air quality.
-
Exclusions
Some air toxics do not have established Reference Concentrations or health benchmarks, limiting the ability to provide direct comparisons for those chemicals.
-
External Factors
Localized sources of pollution, indoor air quality, and personal behaviors (e.g., time spent outdoors) are not included in the tool's estimates and may influence actual exposure levels.
